Common faults

What we repair most often

Slipped and broken slates

On older slate roofs the nails rust long before the slate wears out, so slates start to slide. We refix them with copper or stainless clips and replace broken ones with a matched size and thickness.

Cracked and displaced concrete tiles

Concrete tiles and pantiles cover a large share of the town. Single-lap tiles rely on their interlocks, so one cracked tile lets water straight onto the felt. We replace like for like to keep the lap working.

Ridge and hip tiles

Mortar-bedded ridges on exposed slopes take a beating from wind-driven rain. Loose ridges get rebedded, or converted to a dry-fix system where that suits the roof.

Leaks at chimneys

Stacks are where many leaks begin: cracked flaunching, failed lead flashings, or water soaking through the brickwork itself. We trace which before we quote.

Verges and abutments

Gable verges and the joints where a roof meets a wall are the parts that catch the weather first. Cracked verge mortar and missing soakers are common causes of damp gable walls.

Valleys and gutters

Valleys collect a lot of water fast. Debris, split lead or a mortar valley that has cracked will push water back under the tiles in heavy rain.

How it works

From phone call to repaired roof

You call or send details

Ring 0800 494 7291 free, or use the quote form. A short description and a photo from the garden often tells us a lot.

We come and look

We get up to the roof safely and inspect the problem area and what is around it, because the place water shows inside is rarely where it gets in.

Photos and a written quote

You see what we saw, with a plain explanation and a written price for the repair. No pressure and no clock running.

The repair, guaranteed

We carry out the work, tidy up, and you get the guarantee in writing. See our guarantee.

Honest advice

What we will tell you

A repair is usually the answer

Most roofs we are called to need a repair, not replacing. If someone quotes a full re-roof from the pavement without going up, get another opinion.

Where water appears is not where it enters

Water runs along battens and rafters before it drips. A stain on a bedroom ceiling can come from a flashing several feet away. Finding the entry point is the job.

Like for like matters

A different tile profile or the wrong slate size will not lap properly with its neighbours. We match the existing covering wherever it is still available.

Listed buildings and conservation areas

Portishead has four conservation areas and 38 listed buildings. Like-for-like repair is normally fine; changing materials may need consent. We say so up front.

Questions

Roof repair questions

How quickly can you come out?

For a leak actively coming into the house, as fast as we can get to you. See emergency callouts. For everything else we will agree a time that suits you when you call.

Do you charge for the inspection?

No. We look, explain what we found and give you a written quote. You decide whether to go ahead.

Can you match old slates and tiles?

Usually. Reclaimed slate and matching concrete profiles are widely available. Where a tile has been discontinued we will tell you the options before ordering anything.

Will you need scaffolding?

Many repairs can be done safely with roof ladders and edge protection. Taller buildings, steep slopes over drops, and long runs of work need scaffold. It will be listed on the quote.

Is my repair guaranteed?

Yes. Work we carry out comes with our 20 year written guarantee, with the terms set out in writing.

Do you work outside Portishead?

Yes. We cover Portishead and the surrounding areas, including Clevedon, Nailsea, Pill, Portbury and the Gordano villages.
